Additional Information: James Northcote was born in Plymouth and apprenticed to his watchmaker father, before moving to London and studying under the famous portrait painter, Sir Joshua Reynolds. Northcote painted at least 23 self-portraits during his lifetime. In this work, he has depicted himself with a pallete and paintbrush – the tools of his trade. Shielding his eyes, he looks off into the distance, perhaps seeking inspiration for his work. (, )
