Description
General Description: A portrait of the artist's father. The Rev. Samuel Reynolds was a Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford and became Master of Plympton Grammar School in 1715. He came from a family of churchmen and scholars - his brother John was a Fellow of Eton College and Canon of St. Peter's Exeter. By all accounts he was both amiable and scholarly. Rev. Samuel Reynolds died on Christmas Day, 1745, causing Joshua to return home where he then remained until 1749. This is thought to be a posthumous portrait of Samuel, painted in 1746. (, )
