General Description: Zachariah Mudge was the Prebendary of Exeter and Vicar of St. Andrews in Plymouth. He was born and educated in Exeter and later taught in a school with John Reynolds, grandfather of Joshua Reynolds. Through this contact Mudge befriended the Rev. Samuel Reynolds, Joshua's father and their sons also became lifelong friends. Zachariah's son John became an eminent surgeon and mathematician. Zachariah Mudge was visited by Dr Johnson in 1762 who wrote of his standing in the community 'for his excellence as a preacher and the uniform perfect propriety of his private conduct.' This engraving is after an oil portrait by Reynolds. (, )
