Description
General Description: One of a pair of carved deal wall brackets, c. 1760, painted with a buff or stone-coloured finish, modelled as grotesque rococo masks, the near semi-circular platforms modelled as leaves. (Bowett, Adam, 2013)
Researcher Description: These appear to be wholly original, with original painted surface. The metal fixing brackets top and bottom appear to be 18th century, fixed with 18th century screws brackets. The tops of the platforms are cut with a circular rebate, presumably to house a glass cover, and there are witness marks of a small batten having been glued to the top to engage with a dovetailed slot in the bases of the carved figures. See CS17 and CS18. (Bowett, Adam, 2013)
Physical description
Each bracket is formed of two parts, the mask and the platform. The mask is carved from solid deal and the platform is glued and nailed to the top of the mask. There are iron fixing plates screwed to the top and bottom of the brackets by which they were attached to the wall.
