Additional Information: Hoppner was a leading portraitist in London at the end of the 18th Century. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1795 and was heavily influenced by the work and teachings of Sir Joshua Reynolds.
John, 1st Earl St Germans was MP for St Germans (1780 – 83) and Liskeard (1784 –1801 and 1801 – 1804). He also held other more senior political posts including that of ‘His Majesty’s Remembrancer’ in the Exchequer from October 1785.
In this portrait the Earl is depicted in his parliamentary robes, worn annually on the opening of parliament by every Peer in the House of Lords. (, )
