Additional Information: Hugh Bonfoy joined the Royal Navy in 1739 as a Midshipman before being promoted to Lieutenant in 1744, and Captain in 1745. In 1753 he became Colonial Governor of Newfoundland, and was charge with upholding British penal law against a climate of growing tension between the Irish Catholic and British Protestant people living on the island.
