Inscription, Incised: PLYMOUTH BOROUGH/BOUNDARY/9 FEET E/H.J. W 1888 Interpretation: Henry John Waring (Mayor 1888) conducted Borough beating of the Bounds and it was found that the earlier 1869 Boundary Stone had been buried in building operations. It was agreed to leave that stone in situ and place the new stone with the owner's permission in the garden of 83 Hotham Place. Account given in Western Daily Mercury 3 October 1888. See Casley N: The Medieval Incorporation of Plymouth (Old Plymouth Society) 1997 p 94. Also see Casley (same reference) as to explanation of original boundary being 9 feet east, that being the original shoreline.
