Description
: Bears Charles Rogers' cypher, and on the back 'Dessein de Rubens tres beau M. le Baron de Thierre possede le tableau original.' Rubens did a series of mythological subjects for Philip IV's hunting lodge, Torre della Parada, 1636-8, of which a Triumph of Bacchus was one (a very different composition but a very similar Bacchus figure). This sketch may date from the preliminary idea for the Torre della Parada scheme. (text from 1953 catalogue) (, )
