- DescrizioneGeneral Description: Large, ceremonial silver spade used to commemorate the start of the Burrator Reservoir Project in 1893. Light wood handle with silver mounts with engraved, foliate decoration. Mounts attached by pins at either side of the handle, around the neck, on the main shaft and for the blade. The top of the blade is engraved with the Plymouth Coat of Arms and an inscription commemorating opening the works for the reservoir at Burrator and line of pipes to Roborough. Bespoke carry box of wood with handle on top, front locking with brass hinges and mount engraved. Lined in purple velvet. (, )

Bond Chairman of the Plymouth Water Committee on the occasion of his cutting the first sod the day of 'Ye Fyshynge feaste' August 9th 1893 the purpose of opening the works for the erection of a storage reservoir at Burrator and the Conveyance from thence of the water by a line of pipes to Roborough. hallmark, metal mount on centre of handle, stamped: 4 hallmarks: lion passant, leopard's head for London, date letters for 1893 and maker's mark CB for Charles Boyton & Son.
