General Description: Reynolds was awarded with an honorary doctorate from Oxford in July 1773. He is seen here wearing the robes and black velvet hat appropriate to that degree. This engraving by Sherwin is one of several engraved copies of a portrait whereabouts unknown. Reynolds recorded self-portraits throughout his career, many of which are still extant. It is an aspect of his work which was the subject of a specific Self-Portraits exhibition in 1992 researched by David Mannings. (, )
