: Drawings by Mercier are very rare, with only ten listed in the recent catalogue of his works. The present study, as Denys Sutton has pointed out, is related to a group of four drawings, datable c. 1725, formerly in the collection of J. C. Richardson, (three reproduced by K. T. Parker, in Old Master Drawings, Dec. 1932). All these drawings show Mercier's strong dependence on Watteau's example, both in the choice of medium (sanguine and graphite) and subject.
